He looked in the mirror
His reflection stared back at him
Gaunt
Scraggly
His eyes shone with recollection
Tears brimming at the edge
His gaze drifted to a picture
A picture stuck in the mirrors frame
Of her
She was laughing
Her smile wide and white
Eyes crunched up in the moment
Hair slightly unkempt and red
Bouncy in the moonlight
Curls just so
Memory flashed in his mind
He sat across from her
She had that strapless green dress
Sequins glittering
Shimmering
Reflecting the street lamps
A late night cafe
A table on the sidewalk
Taking in the city around
She had humor in her eyes
That glint of a knowing smile
All for him
He felt her again
In his mind
Bare
Sensual
Lips caressing
The smooth ivory skin
The creases of her lips
The soft tangled hair
The warmth of her body
The scent of her
Like lilacs on the summer breeze
Dates gone by staring up at the stars
Wandering through galleries of night
The touch of her lips
Rolling in the grass
And there again his own reflection
Staring back in the glass
His eyes were sunken now
But he still had the pictures of her
The memories of her
The box of momentos
Of her
Another memory flooded his mind
Their last night
The moon hanging in a sky half full of stars
The horizon green in the distance
The smell of the lake nearby drifting lazily about
Like the reeds in the wind
Grass stained their clothing
The bottle of wine almost empty
Bare bodies languidly drifting against each other
Her haughty laugh in the night
He remembered
He had rolled up on top of her
Back when his smile meant something
He looked into her eyes
Beaming
Gleaming
As she stared back up at him
Her eyes were so wide
So full of longing for life
That yearning that keeps people going
So wide
And he picked up a rose he had brought her
Had given her for the date
Ran it gently along the lines of her face
Drinking in her features
Her expression
Before she could hate him
