Shatter

Her arms were wrapped around me as she clung to my back
Her entire face expressed the laugh
A laugh of exultance
Her head pressed into the back of mine as she squeezed me
The sunshine was glowing through her hair
Light extending in rays around her head
I could hear her laughter echoing in my mind
Her blonde hair radiating an angelic glow
I can feel her arms across my chest as they were that day
Her hair blowing across my face in the wind
The blue of her eyes exuberant
Effulgant in the afternoon sun
I stared at the picture
It was captive to a wooden frame
Shielded by broken glass
Jagged shards stabbing across her face
I ran my finger across the surface of the picture
Blood smeared across our still memory
The scent of copper filled the air
I set the picture down
I got down on the ground
I sprawled out next to her
I put my arms around her
I pulled her body close to mine
Into her hair
I let out a soft sob
I looked at her face
Her lips were blue
Her eyes were cold
Unseeing
I caressed skin colored with the pallor of the forsaken
I remember her last breath
Her last words spoken to the night
Words spoken in fear
Her face was frozen in horrified anticipation
My vision was muddled with tears
Blurry
Undefined
I rocked her gently back and forth
Slowly I noticed something was not right in the room
Just a shadow at first
A shape on the outskirts of my vision
It skittered away as I tried to look
I couldn’t focus on it
Rasping whispers began to fill the air around me
They grew louder the harder I tried to look at the movement
The jittery shape started getting bigger
Closer
It approached me
It was vibrating wildly
Bouncing in and out of definition
The shape was loose
Sketchy
It approached
Growing bigger
The whispers became deafening
The shape was pulsating
Resonating with the whispers
I was frozen in fear
It halted a few inches from my face
I was gasping in breath
I clutched the corpse closer to me
Protectively
The edges of the shape phased in and out
The raspy cacophony died down
The remnants of my life flew past
Visions of memory reflected on the shattered surface shifting before me
A shameful life in the blink of an eye
I felt the shape
It was cold
Unyielding
Hateful
Remorseless as it began to coalesce into something tangible
Something reminiscent
The air around it roiled
Swirled
It spoke
The last words I ever heard
“Redemption is only found in stories.
Nothing can save you.”
