Aftermath

In the aftermath she remains
But she is not in control anymore
Living life after her without still living under her
Three AM my mind swirls
Going back in time
I look back on the day she left me
She wanted to stay friends
I should have walked out that door
And just let it come to an end
But I hadn’t learned to let go
We were bad for each other
Boundaries neither could keep
Misplaced kisses
Friendship, or affection
Or something in between
Feelings never quite left
We were antagonistic
Spiraling back and forth
We fought all the time
Like breaking up over and over
We couldn’t have what we’d had
Jealousy, anger, sadness
We were bad for each other
But I loved her anyway
And though she is no longer in my life
At three AM, she is still there
She is not asking anything of me
She is not calling out to me
She simply still exists there
Next to fifteen years of memories
Memories that don’t just disappear
Because a relationship had to end
I can’t move on if you’re still here
But I can’t make you go away
And the hardest part of letting go
Is that I wish you could have stayed
