This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
– T.S. Eliot
As I track my way back through the passages of space and time
Wandering to find the meaning
The color of it all
As I sit here with the last tank of oxygen
And watch the dead bodies all around me
As I sit here in the last salvation of humankind
After we ransacked the only viable world we had to live on
As I sit here resigned to a fate
With nothing left to give
As I sit here with the burden of an entire species on my shoulders
Lost in translation to the life we tried to make
When it was already too late
And we could do nothing but wait
For death
And as I sit here trapped in a contraption of metal
Gliding listlessly through space
I have discovered what so many have devoted their lives to finding
And never came close
Humanity does not matter
There was no meaning to our existance
When I die
And the door closes on the chapter of our span
The universe will continue on without us
Uncaring
Unyielding
Unsentimental
I listen as the warning alarm on my oxygen tank goes off
With no one to pass this revelation to
No reason to record it
No posterity to teach it to
I listen as my suit hisses
As it tries to evacuate the carbon dioxide taking over my mini atmosphere
With no one to confide my truth in
I gaze out the viewing port into the blackness of space
The distant stars twinkling
The last chance we had
This callous empty universe
And the stars begin to fade
