Isolation

It was a four hour drive
Two of us
Alone on the road
Not a soul besides us
Just
Darkness but for moonlight
The vibration of the highway
The strained silence of hurt
I drove
She sat beside me
Looking out the window
Watching the ghosts of her past slip by
I didn’t try to hold her hand
It was my rebellion
My way of showing emotion
I don’t know if she even noticed
I don’t know if she even cared
The flat plains of harvested cornfields rolled by
The stars dotted the sky, unfettered by mortal concerns.
The headlights showed the way to our destination.
Home.
At least, it was once.
The woman I loved sat in the car
She didn’t look at me
She didn’t say a word
She was right next to me
But I was all alone
